What if maintaining grub2 starts to get boring for the developers, and 
the code rots (or there's never a stable release?)

LILO could be maintained pretty much forever by anyone good (enough) 
with C, since the main issues would be compiler-upgrades requiring code 
changes to compile.  Moving target filesystems would not figure into the 
picture like they do with GRUB.
