Did you ever hear back from the buf maintainer?

If you're willing to maintain a build-from-source buf, and if the
current buf maintainer isn't interested in doing so, I think it's
perfectly reasonable to rename the existing buf to buf-bin.

If the buf maintainer agrees, the easy thing to do would be for
him to submit a new buf-bin build, and for us (SBo team) to change
the maintainer info for the old buf to your name/email. After that,
you can completely rewrite the buf SlackBuild to make it build from
source.

There are currently no dependees for buf, so renaming it won't affect
any other builds.
